Kidepo is the park people talk about in a lowered voice. It is far from everything: a long journey north, rewarded by wide savannah ringed by mountains and the feeling of having a whole landscape to yourself. The Narus Valley is the heart of the park, where lions, elephants, buffalo and giraffes gather near the water, and ostriches stride across the plains. Kidepo is also known for species that are hard to find elsewhere in Uganda. Visitors are few, so a game drive can go for hours without meeting another vehicle. The Karamojong, the cattle herders of this region, add a rich culture to the experience. A community visit, arranged with a respectful guide, is a window into a way of life shaped by this dry, open land.
Getting there
Far northeastern Uganda, near the South Sudan and Kenya borders. A very long drive from Kampala (often split over two days), or a domestic flight to the park airstrip.
Give it enough time: at least three nights, so you are not rushing a long journey for a short stay.
