Bunyonyi is often translated as place of little birds, and the name fits. At dawn the lake is mirror-still, wrapped in terraced hills that climb from the shore, and the air is full of small, bright birdsong. Dugout canoes slip across the water carrying children to school and farmers to market. There is not much you have to do here, which is the point. Paddle a canoe between the islands, walk the ridge trails, visit a village and watch the sun drop behind the hills. Many travellers arrive after a gorilla trek, and a day or two of slow mornings is exactly what tired legs ask for. Some of the islands have old stories attached to them, so ask a local guide to share what they know.
Getting there
Southwestern Uganda, near Kabale. A long drive from Kampala; most people stop here on the way to or from gorilla trekking.
Take a canoe at sunrise, when the water is calm and the birds are most active.
