The Nile has travelled a long way by the time it reaches Murchison Falls, and here it is forced through a gorge so narrow that the whole river seems to hold its breath before dropping. The sound reaches you before the sight does, and the spray soaks anyone who stands close. Most visitors see the falls two ways. A boat trip drifts upstream past hippos, crocodiles, buffalo and waterbirds, ending close to the base of the falls. Later you climb to the top for a different view, where the river hurtles into the gap right beside your feet. On land, the savannah is home to elephants, giraffes, lions and herds of buffalo. A dawn game drive is hard to beat: the grass is gold, the animals are active and the light is soft. End the day with a drink overlooking the Nile.
Getting there
Northwestern Uganda. About a day's drive from Kampala, with the final stretch on rougher roads, or a short domestic flight to a park airstrip.
Bring binoculars: the shoebill stork is the bird many visitors hope to see. Choose a boat trip in the morning or late afternoon, when animals come to the water.
