Sipi Falls is where the air changes. On the slopes of Mount Elgon the climate is cooler, the hills are green and coffee grows on the terraces. Three waterfalls tumble down the cliffs, dropping into the valley below. Spend a morning hiking between the falls with a local guide, crossing farms, streams and rocky ledges, with views that stretch over the plains toward the horizon. Stop at a farm to see how the local coffee is picked, roasted by hand and ground, then drink a cup with the family that grew it. By afternoon you can try abseiling beside the water, or simply sit on a lodge terrace and watch the mist drift past the falls. It is an easy place to lose track of time.
Getting there
Eastern Uganda, via Jinja and Mbale. A full day's drive from Kampala, so many visitors break the journey at Jinja.
Hike with a local guide: trails can be slippery, especially after rain, and guides know the best viewpoints.
